Experimental R&B Musician Kayowa Releases Ode to South London on ‘Based’
Multi-talented experimental musician Kayowa drops second single taken from upcoming album, ‘Based’ in homage to her hometown, South London.
Kayowa continues her vocal flow on this summer vibed track about her ends, SE14, telling her south side story over a chill beat produced by wavexnoir.
Maintaining her fierce, feminine energy and thoughtful introspection heard on her debut releases, ‘Based’ continues to deliver South London native Kayowa’s creative force to communicate her story as an upcoming artist. Unapologetically herself, she highlights injustices in a fun, thought provoking way in her music.
“‘Based’ is about my ever changing experiences of being a South Londoner. I was born and raised in South London, and I owe a lot to South for making me who I am today!”
Since launching in January 2020, Kayowa has written and produced (alongside TM JoJo, Viceroy Lindsay and Gyptxvn) debut singles ‘Ridin’ ‘Can’t Breathe’ and ‘Hazmat’ as well as her debut album and deluxe edition, ‘King K’ featuring PsychoYP. In addition, mixtape ‘Glacier Tapes: Volume One’ with Frxsty B was released on DSP’s following the tapes success on Soundcloud at the beginning of the year. Her unparalleled ability to create music in quick succession combined with a real authenticity is a breath of fresh air with her musical output and topics depending on how she is feeling on the day of writing.
An advocate for good energy, Kayowa believes that what you put out into the world should be positive to bless someone else, something that is reflected in her musical output and goals of being a philanthropist. Facilitating change in the world is something Kayowa is keen to lead in by example, aiding in raising the planet's vibration in order to make living easier for all.
“Growing up, my mother told me to “do unto others as I want them to do unto me”, and I’ve really internalised this proverb. I know that not everyone will be kind to me even if I am kind to them, which sometimes hurts, but I’ve mastered the art of giving without having any expectations.”
With a sound incomparable to most, Kayowa looks up to any array of artists including Fela Kuti, Bjork, Sophie, Roots Manuva and 2Pac reflecting her eclectic taste and individuality heard in her music.
