Pia Mia Delves into Debut Album, “Anti Romantica”
Pia Mia’s long-awaited debut album, Anti Romantica, marks a pivotal moment in her career, blending personal storytelling with the rhythmic pop sound she’s known for. From her early days covering songs on social media to becoming a distinctive voice in the industry, this album reflects her evolution as both an artist and a person. Anti Romantica delves into the beauty and friction between romantic ideals and reality, shaped by Pia’s experiences in Hollywood and the music industry.
In this exclusive interview with Cake The Mag, she shares her inspirations behind the album, the importance of asserting her voice in a mainly collab-free project, and how her roots in Guam continue to influence her artistry. With Anti Romantica, Pia Mia showcases her journey through love, heartbreak, and resilience, all while remaining true to her authentic self.
Congratulations on your debut album, Anti Romantica! We’ve been impatiently waiting for this. What inspired the title?
Thank you. Anti Romantica refers to the contrast between the aspirational versus the reality of romance, in relationships, art, or one’s world view, and the beauty of this friction.
What were some of the key inspirations behind this album, both musically and personally?
The title was inspired by my experiences in Hollywood and the music industry. I approach making music like writing in my diary — I wrote the songs just as I would write in my journal, then laid the vocals over rhythmic pop beats. For this album, the songs capture the tension between the lyrics and the sound. I am a true romantic, and while the songs on this album are romantic, there’s an element of 'anti' in each one, whether it’s through the narrator’s experiences or the real-life challenges of getting my music released. Despite that, I remain a devoted romantic.
Your journey in music has been unique, starting from covers on social media. How does it feel to finally release your debut album?
It’s a dream come true. Ever since I was a little girl, fresh off the plane from Guam and hustling in LA, all I wanted was to release an album and tour the world. Over the past decade, I’ve built up an extensive catalog of music that, for various reasons, has never been released. This project marks my first LP, and there are more to follow.
How would you describe the sound and vibe of this album compared to your earlier singles?
Anti Romantica continues my signature rhythmic pop, dance, and power ballad sound. It’s a naturally evolved version that reflects the heartbreak, struggles, and emotional highs and lows I’ve experienced along the way.
This is mainly a collab free album. What was the importance of making sure you are the sole voice on this project?
Continuing with the theme of contrast and friction, as an artist in the music industry, you’re often restricted by external factors, and you have to fight to release a project you truly believe in. My independent projects, including Anti Romantica, have given me the freedom to make my voice heard. While Anti Romantica is largely my ‘sole voice,’ my friend Marc E Bassy is featured on the track Wish You Well.
How has your upbringing in Guam influenced your music and identity as an artist?
Enormously. My background and upbringing in Guam influence everything I do and shape how I see the world. I wouldn’t be where I am today without the support and encouragement of the people back home. I always incorporate a sense of home in my music, from the way my songs sound to how I present myself as an artist. No matter where I go, home is always with me.
What message or feeling do you want your fans to take away from this album?
Sometimes life is anti-romantic, and that’s okay. You just have to keep pushing until you achieve that romantic breakthrough. The fans who have followed me on this journey know it has taken over ten years to release this album. Throughout that time, there were moments when I lost hope, experienced heartbreak, felt lost, and considered giving up. Yet, I also had many positive and special moments that I will cherish for the rest of my life. If I hadn’t persevered, I wouldn’t have been able to hold onto those memories.
I hope my experiences show people that anything can happen at any time and serve as a reminder not to compare your timeline or success to those around you. We are all on our own journeys; the only competition is with yourself to be better and stronger than the day before. Trust the process, even when it’s difficult.
Fashion and style are a big part of your brand. How do these elements play a role in your music and visuals for the album?
Fashion expresses emotion. The colors, textures, and patterns all contribute to how you feel when you see an outfit. When I listened back to my album, choosing the colors and themes came naturally. I appreciate what I like, regardless of trends. Sometimes I embrace trends, but often I find myself drawn to styles that contrast with what’s currently popular. I’ve always believed that when I wear an outfit I love, I can accomplish anything.
Lately, I’ve been into something as playful as wearing athletic socks with heels. There are times when I have a budget, and other times when I don’t — that’s part of the challenge. I sometimes think about clearing out my closet and starting fresh because I’m tired of pieces I’ve worn for ten years. But then I remind myself that I love those items; they’re my comfort pieces. I’ve committed to them and invested in my wardrobe, so you’ll likely see me in my favorites for decades to come.
I enjoy mixing designer items with basics and staple pieces, which is how I was first recognized in the fashion industry and gradually built the designer side of my closet. I truly believe that money can’t buy style.
Looking back at your career so far, how have you evolved as an artist and person leading up to this release?
I’ve learned many hard lessons and let go of numerous relationships to find peace. I’m now focused on building lasting connections, both professionally and personally. I feel stronger and smarter than ever. I’ve always advocated for the artistic vision I believe in, but I approach that fight with greater fierceness and confidence now, no matter the obstacles I face.
What's next for you after the debut album — any plans for tours, visuals, or new projects?
More projects, music, live shows and romance novels coming your way.
