Jasper Soloff: Photographer and Director, Magazines and Billboards
We’ll just start name dropping. Jasper has worked with some of our favourite talents: Conan Gray, Noah Cyrus, Maggie Lindemann, Billie Eilish, Emma Chamberlain, Pete Davidson, Niki Demar, and the list goes on! You may have some work on the cover of magazines or in the middle of Times Square. Here, we talk to Jasper Soloff about all things photography, inspirations, and more.
When and how did you start stepping into photography?
I started freshman year - fell into a basic black and white photography class. I became absolutely obsessed with b and w film and actually only shot in black and white for a couple years after. I'd spend days in the darkroom printing. Eventually, I applied to Central Saint Martins in London and studied fine arts. I fell in love with colour there and have been working on it ever since.
One of your 2020 projects is your direction for Tate McRae's music video for 'Stupid'. Your work was all over Time Square and pretty much, talked about everywhere. How did your ideation come about? Did this experience bring more inspiration for your projects that followed?
Working with Tate has been a dream, she's truly one of the most talented people of her generation. Seeing my work in Time Square was definitely a surreal experience. Being from New York City it's always been a dream of mine to have my visuals showcased there. I think every project I do builds off one another. It's all about consistency and pushing yourself even during down times. I'm always daydreaming about what's next.
What has been the most exciting collaboration you have been a part of thus far?
Probably working with Billie Eilish. It was an absolute dream and to see her skyrocket like this has been really cool.
We're massive Conan Gray fans and you are actually the person behind his most recent cover art with Lauv for their single 'Fake'. How was that experience? Do you see yourself pursuing more cover art projects?
Thank you! Big Conan fan here as well. It was amazing working with Lauv and Conan on their single art. Definitely going to be shooting more cover art in the future.
What should we be expecting from you in the near future?
I'm manifesting more work, bigger projects, and massive music videos. I cannot wait to share what's next.
Finally, what’s your favourite type of cake?
LOVE this question. Probably anything with chocolate, I love banana cream pie even though that's not cake!
