Getting to Know Kayowa
With the release of her latest single ‘Based’ out, we go to know Kayowa a little better - from inspiration to expression and a little peak into what to expect from her upcoming album.
Tell us a little bit about yourself. Who is Kayowa and why did you get into music?
My name is Kayowa, shortened for Oluwakayowa meaning “God has given us joy”, so what can I say? I’m joyful. I got into music cos it was always something i wanted to do.
Your sound is very unique and conversational - what’s inspired this approach?
I draw inspiration from anything and everything. My approach to music is just how I navigate my way in the world, so there's not really much to it.
‘Based’ - do you feel like London (or SE14 in particular) has anything to do with your musical and artistic growth? Is it a space that allows you to experiment and discover your voice?
No, not really, I could be anywhere and make a song like that. It all depends on my surroundings.
You're very outspoken and expressive both on social media and in your music. What is your goal when releasing each track? Do you want people to get to know you better or is it simply an outlet?
My goal is to feel good and free when making music and releasing it. I have a lot to say. I have a lot to get off my chest.
You have an album coming out at the end of summer, what can we expect from the sound? Will we be getting more singles before it's out?
Yeah, expect a couple more singles out before then. The upcoming album is all about being overloaded with digital stimuli as most of us are these days.
Finally, what’s your favourite type of cake?
Carrot cake.
